Mood Disorders


"Mood disorders" actually consist of a variety of disorders and are not characterized by just one specific disorder. This type of disorder affects ones emotions and moods. This in turn affects the way a person lives. The brain takes up a big part in the origin of the disorders. Many medical professionals feel that the brain chemicals have some type of imbalance that cause these disorders. Let’s begin with a list of disorders that affect our society in a rather unbelievable way.


A Breakdown of "Mood Disorders"

As mentioned, there are numerous amounts of disorders that have an effect on our society in different ways, causing diverse symptoms and dissimilar repercussions. Perhaps the most well-known disorder is Major Depression which affects our population in an astonishing manner. This type of disorder causes low moods, loss of interest in daily activities and disturbing thoughts, such as death. Many times this disorder is treated with antidepressants and if the depressive state becomes out-of-control, the individual may be hospitalized. It is not difficult to notice a person’s lunge into depression and getting help is very important. A rate of 60% of suicides is due to Major Depression.



Moving on, Bipolar Disorder is another disorder that stricken many individuals. This disorder is hereditary, but this is not always the case. Bipolar, otherwise known as manic depression causes an individual to have moods that go from one extreme to another with no in-between. You will notice with Bipolar that a person may have symptoms of complete mania, such as extreme house cleaning, excessive talking, spending money they don’t have on useless items and many other symptoms. This is like a high for these individuals. The next step for bipolar sufferers will be extreme depression and anger. These episodes can last for days or even weeks. Bipolar can be treated to help those affected maintain a more stable life.

Less Common "Mood Disorders"

Cyclothymic Disorder is not heard of as often as Bipolar or Major Depression but it can be just as devastating. This chronic condition actually last for periods of 2 years and consist of hypomania and depressive states with normal states mixed in. Many times drug abuse and alcoholism is a major contributor to Cyclothymic disorder. This is a rather complicated disorder to diagnose and many times moves on to a diagnosis of Bipolar 1 of 2. Lastly, is a disorder known as Dysthymic Disorder, which again is a chronic condition. Basically, dysthymic disorder is a form of depression, but is not as severe as Major Depressive Disorder. Many people do not recall being depressed with this disorder, but it does indeed affect their everyday life.

"Mood disorders" unfortunately come in many different packages and some are more harmful than others, but all should be taken seriously. Many will find that they are not alone in the world of mood disorders, which helps them to feel more comfortable with their disorder and more willing to seek treatment.
