Cyclothymic Disorder

What Is Cyclothymic Disorder?

Cyclothymic Disorder is a mild form of Bipolar. It is actually a mild form of Bipolar II. This disorder is not heard of quite as often as both Bipolar I and Bipolar II, but is indeed part of the Bipolar spectrum. Much like Bipolar, this disorder has proven to be genetic and is more often passed down from family members.

Diagnosing Cyclothymic Disorder

Diagnosing this disorder is a bit more difficult than Bipolar, but many doctors consider one episode of hypomania to be enough evidence to diagnose a patient with the disorder. Many patients do not only suffer from hypomania episodes, but also from what is called dysthymic episodes as well. These are basically episodes of depression. This is why this disorder is considered to be a mild form of Bipolar, because it mimics the symptoms of the disease, but with much less severity. Many individuals who suffer from this disorder actually enjoy the periods of hypomania and tend to become more outgoing and productive. This situation makes it easy for the people surrounding the individual to identify the disorder and perhaps facilitate them to get help.

Once a doctor has given their patient a full physical, they will go over the patient’s symptoms. It is very common for the cyclothymic sufferer to deny that they even have a problem and were forced to visit the doctor by friends or family, this is actually the first sign for doctors that the patient does indeed have a problem. Symptoms of this disorder include, but are not limited to racing thoughts and speech, appetite changes, increased energy, poor judgment, increased spending habits and as far as the depressive state these symptoms include, fatigue, ongoing sadness, thoughts of death and many other negative moods.

Treating Cyclothymic Disorder

There is an alternative treatment for this disorder that works better than prescription drugs. Researchers at Harvard Medical School have successfully used fish oil supplementation to treat this disorder. A normal adult human brain contains more than 20 grams of DHA. Low DHA levels have been linked to low brain serotonin levels which are connected to an increased tendency to bipolar disorder, depression, suicide, and violence. It is true that exercise, vitamins and sunlight can do wonders for any type of mental disorder.

Although this type of disorder is considered mild, it is still very much a serious disorder and should be treated with lofty importance. Feeling up one minute only to plummet the next is not normal and being diagnosed can help you fulfill the dream of a more stable life.
