Childhood Disorders

Millions of kids are afflicted with one of the following seven Childhood Disorders which can complicate their carefree existence. Hopefully your child is healthy and full of fun and frolic, without a care or worry in the world. Unfortunately, it's not always the case. With early treatment and careful management, your child can live a happy, healthy and productive life.

1) Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD). - or Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) affects a child's ability to focus, learn and sustain a normal level of activity. The hallmarks of a child with ADHD are: inability to control activity level, lack of patience, easily distracted, forgetfulness, rapid shifting or jumping from one activity to another and uneasy sleeping.

2) Asperger's Disorder. - is a Pervasive Development Disorder that is related to Autism. Children with Asperger's are characterized by social exclusion and eccentric behavior. Two-way social interaction is impaired as is non-verbal communication. There is usually a predominant focal interest. Clumsiness and odd speech inflections are common, as are obsessive routines and sensitivity to sound, light, smells and tastes.

3) Autism. - is a neurological disorder that impairs social development. It is often characterized by impaired communication skills, limited interests and repetitive actions such as stacking or lining up objects. Usually parents notice something different about their child developmentally by 2 years of age.

4) Conduct Disorder. is a term used to refer to and group many behavioral disorders. Some behaviors that fall under this umbrella include: aggression to people or animals, destruction of property, serious rule infractions such as frequent truancy or running away from home.

5) Oppositional Defiant Disorder. - also known as ODD, children with this childhood disorder have an ongoing pattern of acting out and defying authority with regularity. These kids are defiant, disrespectful, and hostile. They often throw temper tantrums, blame others, act mean or hateful, are frequently angry and seek revenge.

6) Separation Anxiety Disorder.- while normal for a baby or toddler to suffer from separation anxiety, it is not normal for an older child or teen to feel this way. Children with this disorder may cling to their parents and have a hard time falling at sleep at night on their own. The fear must be so strong that it affects social or academic functioning.

7) Tourette's Disorder. - is an inherited psychiatric disorder which is characterized by having multiple physical tics and at least one verbal tic which are involuntary sound utterances.

The earlier a child is diagnosed, the better the odds to treat and manage the disorder so that the child can live up to their very best potential. These disorders should not be thought of as impassable obstacles for a child's healthy development.
