Anxiety Disorders


There are many faces of anxiety disorders, from anxiety resulting after a traumatic event to an irrational fear of public places. Anxiety is a natural response to stressful events that can inspire enhanced performance when released in proper amounts. However, too much anxiety can result in constant fear or dread that gets in the way of daily life. The good news is that by identifying an anxiety order, a patient can receive effective treatment and enjoy a higher quality of life once again.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder . This type of disorder is characterized by exaggerated worry and anxiety that gets in the way of daily activities. The symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder might include Restlessness or feeling on edge; fatigue and difficulty concentrating; muscle tension and excessive sweating; stomachaches and headaches; sleep disturbances; a constant feeling that something bad is going to happen.

Acute Stress Disorder . This type of disorder is usually seen within a month after a traumatic event has like a serious accident or death. A person experiencing acute stress disorder may have the following symptoms; detachment or a feeling of numbness; a temporary loss of memory about the traumatic event; lack of awareness of the world around him.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder . When acute stress disorder lasts longer than a month, the diagnosis may be changed to post traumatic stress disorder. Symptoms may include: symptoms listed above for acute stress disorder; shame or guilt; flashbacks of the event or disturbing dreams; poor relationships; self destructive behavior, such as substance abuse; a feeling of hopelessness about the future

Panic Disorder . A panic disorder is characterized by panic attacks that seem to appear out of nowhere and manifest with physical symptoms including: dizziness or light-headedness; chest pain or difficulty breathing; tingling in the fingers and toes; feeling as though you are going to die

Phobia . A phobia is an intense, irrational fear of an object or situation. Some more common phobias include crowds, animals, elevators, flying or water. Symptoms might include: Uncontrolled anxiety when exposed to the source of the fear; avoidance of the source whenever possible; an understanding that the fear is irrational but inability to control it; physical reactions like sweating, increased heart rate and difficulty breathing.

Agoraphobia. Agoraphobia is a specific fear of public places, especially those where a large crowd may be present. Symptoms of agoraphobia may include: fear of being alone; fear of crowded environments, such as sporting events and shopping malls; a feeling of claustrophobia in places like airplanes and elevators; feeling helpless and overly dependent on others; inability to leave home; physical symptoms similar to a panic attack

Social Phobia. Social phobia, also known as social anxiety, is a fear of humiliating oneself in social situations. Symptoms of this anxiety disorder might include: persistent fear of social situations; the fear may provoke a physical panic attack; an avoidance of social situations; knowledge that the fear is irrational; the avoidance gets in the way of daily life

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder . Obsessive compulsive disorder is characterized by recurring, obsessive thoughts and repetitive, compulsive behaviors that are an attempt to control or prevent those thoughts. Symptoms of obsessive compulsive behavior might include: Obsessive thoughts about germs or contamination; a need to keep things in order; aggressive or sexual thoughts; repeated washing and cleaning; counting and rechecking; performing the same action over and over again.
