What Is Aspergers?


Aspergers disorder is a syndrome that is characterized by behavioral problems and poor social interaction. Though it is often associated with autism, it has been found to be milder. Unlike autism, children with Asperger’s disorder are found to have no delay in communication skills.

Studies show that children with Aspergers Disorder have good verbal abilities, though some may have difficulty in communicating the language to others. Regarding their cognitive skills, they are also advanced compared to those with autism. Children with Asperger’s disorder are able to feed themselves and do things on their own. However, they usually have problems with their attention span and show odd or unlikely mannerisms.

This syndrome was taken from the name of a famous Vietnamese pediatrician, Hans Asperger. He was able to observe some noticeable behavioral patterns and poor coordination skills on some of his patients.

Mostly affected were males at the age ranging from five to nine. He discovered some visible signs and symptoms that were not normal as compared to other kids. Though they had proper cognitive and language skills, they were found to be poor in coordination and interaction with people.

Though the real cause of Aspergers syndrome is still unknown, researchers believe that it might be hereditary. Some say that it is due to depression and other mental disorders. However, researchers pointed out that this syndrome is not caused by the improper upbringing of the parents to their children. They say that this is a definitely a fallacy.
